Research Project Title: The impact of social support on quality of life of Tinnitus sufferers.

This research is being conducted by Colleen Murphy under the supervision of Prof. William Noble from the University of New England, Armidale, NSW. The study aims to further our understanding of how aspects of life quality for Tinnitus sufferers may be enhanced by their perceptions of social support.

You must be 18 years of age or older to participate in this study and your participation is entirely voluntary. If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete a series of questionnaires to assess the severity of your Tinnitus, the extent of social support you receive and certain aspects of your quality of life. The questionnaires should be completed in 20 minutes or less. You can choose not to participate in this study or to withdraw at any time without consequences, question or penalty. Your completion and return of the questionnaires signifies your voluntary consent to participate in the project.

University of Iowa Tinnitus Web Surveys

The University of Iowa is looking for individuals with tinnitus to complete web surveys at:

http://www.uihealthcare.com/depts/med/otolaryngology/clinics/tinnitus/index.html

Go to the website to complete the “Patient Surveys.”

Tinnitus Global Questionnaire asks about the impact of tinnitus on individuals. It takes about 30 minutes.

Dietary Supplements and Herbal Supplements asks about your experience with taking any supplements for tinnitus. The amount of time this survey takes will depend on how many different supplements you have taken. If you have not tried any supplements for treating your tinnitus, skip this survey.

Cochlear Implants and Tinnitus is designed specifically for patients who have both a cochlear implant(s) and tinnitus. This survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

The University will not collect your name or any identifying information about you.

Thank you for your time and cooperation.

NEUROMONICS

The Acoustic Desensitisation Protocol, provided by Neuromonics, is a tinnitus therapy program which combines music and 'shower' sound (modified to accommodate to mild or moderate hearing loss) and counselling. The therapy is based upon the same principles as Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), that is, the neurophysiological model of tinnitus generation and perception (see Fact Sheet 13).

There are now three independent audiologists offering the Neuromonics Protocol in Adelaide. They are David May and Dr Judith Boswell at Adelaide Hearing Consultants (Adelaide City, ph 8410 2900; Glenelg East , ph 8376 0999) and Adrian Galindo at Allears Hearing and Tinnitus Clinic (North Adelaide, 8410 8888). The Neuromonics protocol is also available at some National Hearing Centres.

For more information about the Neuromonics protocol, go to www.neuromonics.com
