Judith Boswell - Audiologist

Dr Judith Boswell is an Audiologist and Director of Adelaide Hearing Consultants, in which Tinnitus SA is based. She is a full member of the Audiological Society of Australia and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and holds clinical certificates from both associations.

Judith qualified initially as a Speech Pathologist and practised this profession for a time before pursuing studies in Audiology in Melbourne and in Seattle (Washington).

From 1989-94, Judith was employed as Research Audiologist with the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin, researching middle ear infection and hearing loss in Indigenous Australians. She received her PhD from the University of Sydney in 1994.

Judith first came to Adelaide in 1994. During more than three years with the Flinders University of South Australia, Judith planned and co-ordinated the first Master in Audiology course to be offered in South Australia. During this period she maintained her connections with Indigenous ear health via the Menzies School and Nganampa Health Council, a community controlled Aboriginal medical service in northern South Australia.

In 1999-2000, Indigenous health called again and Judith left Adelaide to manage the Ear, Nose and Throat Outreach Project, based in Cairns. This pilot Project delivered surgical and audiological services and training to remote indigenous communities in Cape York, the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Torres Strait. In 2000, Judith returned to Adelaide to manage a private audiological consultancy and clinical practice – Adelaide Hearing Consultants (AHC). In 2001, Adelaide Hearing Consultants was awarded a contract by the SA government to provide free information, advice and referral services for people with tinnitus. Tinnitus SA is the first such service in the country and it attracts over 600 client inquiries each year. Judith also provides tinnitus therapy to individuals via AHC, including Tinnitus Retraining Therapy and the Neuromonics Tinnitus Desensitisation Protocol.

Judith continues her involvement in Indigenous ear health issues, primarily by providing regular ear and hearing health training to health staff in remote communities in NSW, the NT and WA. Another area of interest is the assessment and management of (Central) Auditory Processing Disorders in children.

In mid-2007, AHC merged with David May Audiology to provide a ‘bigger, better’ independent audiology service with offices in Adelaide city centre and Glenelg East. David also provides services on behalf of Tinnitus SA (see below).
